I come from a writing background. I'd like more business savviness and I would love to know more about programming/design, but hopefully I'll get the basics the longer I'm in the industry.

Excellent article. I'd say that SEO is now more a mix of good PR, Marketing and Advertising - In fact the process of getting a company to define their keywords often involves the same processes ad agencies go through with clients. But in my experience SEOers listen a bit more!

I recommend "The War Against Cliche" by Martin Amis. Also, "Lucky Jim" by his father, Kingsley Amis.

Excellent article. I am a Marketing person myself and I simply loved the concept of SEO when I first heard about it. I was into business writing and then came into SEO starting off as a seo content writer, to link developer, to online advertising. It's been four years now since I took up SEO and come to think of it I don't know how to code. I mean, I am good with html/css but coding is something which I could never get myself to learn. But I do head a bunch of progammers whom I reach to whenever matters of coding arise in SEO work.. like redirecting, making dynamic URLs seo friendly and stuff.

I believe SEO is all about creativity.

1.) keyword research - needs creativity (to find those golden keywords)

2.) Writing SEO copy that appeals to human-beings too - needs creativity

3.) Researched writing - needs creativity

4.) Designing a website and making it SEO friendly - needs creativity

5.) Site architecture - needs creativity

Overall SEO is all about being creative just like marketing with a bit of techy stuff thrown in. It's certainly not the other way round.

I agree - the job of the seo means many different things to many different people. If you have a high listing for a popular term; call yourself an seo!
