Hi Julie,

Number 31 made me almost fall out of my seat with laughter! The guy pictured in #20 looks vaguely familiar too...is he from the Northeast? :)

All kidding aside, the one that annoys me the most is someone who has "created" a page on their website with a copy of our logo. This is usually accompanied by a detailed request of ridiculous demands.

First time reader, first time commenter.

There were several things that stood out to me from your list, but my favorite was "by calling me Joyce. Yeah, it’s a first name but it’s not MY first name."

Good stuff.

I have not heard the word "blaspheme" (#25) in a long time. I really enjoyed this article. I know it would be helpful for anyone trying to build a quality link campaign for a web site.

Running down the list you have provided here, I have to say that my Productsforresale.com in-box usually gets assaulted from the following types of link requests...

7. Approaching a site with the wrong client. A site for addiction and recovery isn’t the best choice for a gambling link.

32. Asking to trade links if you put yours up first.

33. Asking to trade links when what you have to offer is truly a worthless site

22. Insisting that the site owner make permanent changes to the site’s template or structure just to accommodate your needs.

19. Sending an obviously scripted first email, then replying with one that is in a completely different tone.

39. Stating that your company is one of the best-known and most successful SEO firms out there when no one in the industry has ever heard of you.

34. Using a name that does not correspond with your email address.

I think since my sites inception, I received maybe three link requests that were from a site that was in the same theme, and from a webmaster who actually owned the site they wanted me to link to..

It's stupefying to me that some people are bold enough to believe that somehow I won't notice how "cheesy" or underhanded some of their requests are. But, I guess like spam, the practice is probably not going away anytime soon..

Hi Brent,

I do have disdain for the idiotic link requests, absolutely. I also have close to 2 years of overseeing my own staff's link request email threads, so the idea for this post came from both their own mistakes, as obviously I can see things they have tried which did not get a link, and from link requests that come to my attention for whatever reason.

I just happen to have a barbed manner I suppose.
