May depend on search type and results given. Maybe the search engines could offer a ‘classic’ view (10 blue links) as well as the more portal like results. Perhaps they could extend their ‘personalisation’ offerings into giving users some power over that decision.

I feel conversion analysis is the way forward, I have so many clients whom are on page one for their search term but want to be position one.
This really isn’t going to help them get any more business out of there site without looking into how to maximise the sites ability to convert.

One more thing about ranking theories in this algo, nothings seems to stable which we can say that any particular things work like in old algos
