I never give a definite answer to anything like how many links will it take to get to number one, how much will I have to spend to achieve what I want, how long will it take, etc. If I had control of all the on-page as well as just links, I could probably give a better answer, but as it stands, I almost never do. This is where we see more of the art of SEO than the science (giving answers) I think. I also don't like saying I don't know though, as it does make me feel like I, um, don't know, but hell, I don't know. I could work my arse off and do my job very well but maybe the site has massive technical issues and downtime, or maybe it has a crap reputation, or maybe it's full of keyword spam/hidden links, etc. I'd be very suspicious of any SEO who can give definitive answers on how long something will take to happen. However, if you're an SEO who can't answer questions like "why isn't my content indexed?" or "what needs to be done to my site to make it better in terms of SEO?" well...that is sad. God I'm rambling. I'm now done. Great post.

“How come [competitor] is number one?”

That is my favourite question. My standard answer, they are spending £[Clients budget *10] a month.
