Great info, Sarah & Mike! This kind of bizarre review makes me glad I'm not in a consumer-facing business. Assuming the negative comment is real (not your competitor!), replying quickly and in a positive manner can have a big effect - 70% of people posting negative comments who got a reply reversed their criticism, either by removing it or posting new positive comments: Replies Can Change Customer Minds. Thanks for sharing the story. Fake/false negative reviews very much affect small business owners. What can you say when people think you are too happy? What do they expect a fix to be? Truly bizarre. Your reviewer gives pirates a bad name.

It’s certainly going to go down as one of the most irrational negative reviews I’ve ever seen, almost living up to ‘When installing my new windows, the installers made a mess, they did clean it up afterwards but I wasn’t happy as they were doing it’ (yes I saw that one once)

I love what DennisG writes! That’s exactly how our clients responded. What sort of pirate complains about sources of nearby liquor? He failed to mention (or intentionally left out) the other businesses on either sides of those; health food store, a woman’s gym, very popular sushi spot, and dentists office.

You would think that somebody presenting himself as Jack Sparrow, a notorious pirate fond of drinking and boozing, would have no trouble with the door next to a liquor store, and would be able to fend off all sketchy robbers in that sketchy neighborhood…

Urgh.. even the pirates are becoming Metro…
