I know what you mean. In a busy department (job) we tend to spend so much time 'fire-fighting' day to day stuff there's no time left for the seemingly secondary tasks.

But like you, I discovered that if you can take a step back and do the process map - at least for the crucial processes, you'd help your efficiency and quite likely, avoid a lot of the 'fire-fighting'...
