Great article. But still some of these methods will cost quite a bit.
The cheapest way to help people out I think would be to go to sites like fiverr, guru, or elance and at least try to outsource it. you will not need to buy expensive equipment yourself or slave away at making video when you have no clue about it. you would be surprised what some geeky kids can do for you for literally peanuts. fiverr is absolutely amazing source used by some big guys as well. there are a lot of gigs, some of them so bizzare. there one girl who will dress up as charlie chaplin and do some jumping or whatever for $5. i haven't used this site yet, but i'm sure i will for my blog or to market my products or to apload to my youtube channel. i am camera shy so i will definitelly use fiverr to do videos for me.

Great and awesome post! Very entertaining to read and educational too.

It's a tough job to get a marketing video done especially if you have no background and haven't done it before.

For some animation and video backgrounds, VIDEOBLOCKS.COM is a great place you should try.

Thanks for the feedback Phil - very good points although I have had some nightmares with all the gear no idea in the past too! I would agree with the sound quality though as I see lots of fantastic videos with terrible sound even though it has been shot by a pro as it seems to take second place.

Avoid echoing spaces as echo is easy to add in but difficult to take away from a recording - likewise additional noise like cars outside. I haven't checked out Motion but I will do - having come from oldschool Director I forget you don't have to do it all frame by frame anymore :D

Looking forward to your talk at SES! A write up of your session may be a good follow up.

Hey Jackie,

Lovely little post with some great advice for those struggling to get going with video - fantastic job.

I'd just add a couple of small things...If you're doing "talking head" interviews/testimonial stuff - You're best off spending your money on some good lights rather than a good camera. The key to a professional looking picture is actually in the lighting (in most instances), rather than the camera. Additionally, to get good audio quality for that kind of "voice over" content - use a lavalier (lapel) microphone rather than a shotgun camera attached to the camera.

If you'd like to give animation stuff a go yourself - the cheapest and easiest to use animation software is Motion for Mac. If you buy some stock footage from places like shuttershock/istock, then add your logo to it in motion - this is an immensely cheap and easy way of creating a branded intro sequence.
