I think where LinkedIn failed to catch my attention was due to how limited it was. Was. It's definitely improving!

I prefer to leave Facebook to general foolery, I've tried it for advertising but without success. LinkedIn is improving gradually as they add more and more social tools and I've gained a few clients from connections of mine but it's only one part of my large social circle of trust :)

/accepts Jane as a friend on Facebook/
Jane, I'm quite surprised that Facebook has been better for you than LinkedIn in terms of biz. contacts.

But then again LinkedIn as very limited in comparison. LOL - it's for people who take themselves very seriously...
/steps on a few toes, like an elephant/...

I kinda' agree with most opinions here, but I can't help thinking that the novelty of social networking will wear off for those of us who use it as a marketing medium, and then it has to evolve. I guess like everything else... and that's the fun of being in our line of work.

I'm quite positive that social networking can be beneficial... as well as being a huge waste of time ;)

Facebook's "fan pages" and groups have proven good tools for branding. I'd also never have had half the opportunities I've enjoyed if it hadn't been for the connections I've made through various social media and social networking services. But I'm also prone to wasting a great deal of time browsing pictures, chatting aimlessly and deciding which groups to join / leave :D

/thinks. Goes to Facebook. Adds Anita as a friend/

I don't really rate any other networking sites as much as I do Facebook for either professional or personal purposes. I've even had more luck using Facebook for business-related tasks than I have LinkedIn, astonishingly enough!

Hi Anita

I'd agree that social networking is a great way to make new contacts as well as new clients but it shouldn't be relied upon in isolation. Social networking can be a great way to connect with people you thought were out of reach and with a strong brand these people can help you spread the word. Like anything though you get out what you put in, participation is key.
