People SO underestimate the value of 'Word of Mouth', yet - interestingly - I've found Twitter to work in a very similar way.
Many years ago I worked for a while selling advertising space (well, trying to!), for a local directory, and the number one 'excuse' for not buying was that all their work was gained simply by 'Word of Mouth'.

It's great to be recommended, but when that person actually NEEDS you (maybe six month or more down the line), they'll have to find your phone number etc from somewhere, so before the Internet (an online directory), what did people do? Look in a directory! If only I'd twigged that at the time, I might have had a great career as a Saleswoman!

Twitter (unlike Facebook - in my experience), somehow links us by osmosis to other like-minded people, and it's been invaluable to me so far. I reckon that if I needed a pool cleaner (I should be so lucky!), I'd pretty soon find one via my followers! (janereynolds8 Twitter)
